Tunnel vision and what it brings

Life can be so busy that most of us just focus on what we need to, to keep deriving results from our work. It’s absolutely understandable, and for many, unavoidable. If they divided their attention, they’d quickly become distracted, they may find it harder to regain the speed and efficiency they were operating with, and they could earn less money.

Yet, sometimes, peering beyond the usual can bring refreshingly rewarding results. Naturally, if you’re only focused on one thing – and give it due attention with tunnel vision-like concentration, you’re only going to get one kind of result, by and large. If you spread your focus, you’re more likely to encounter more opportunity and time-sensitive offerings from others. If you can spare the time, do it.

It comes down to having connections in business, and many of them are made socially. Amongst those you choose to associate with, pick a few wild types – you may not see the sense in that, but let me explain.

Eccentric personalities think differently to the middle-of-the-bell-curve types. They react differently and see things in ways which can be new and quirky, but cool. If you feel you’re suffering from tunnel vision due to the pressure from your career, befriending an eccentric will no doubt expand your immediate thinking.

Such people are sometimes able to connect you to new business, offer solutions which stand out, or problem-solve in catchy ways. If you strike up the right kind of friendships with these personality types, you could find novel ways to increase your work efficiency and thereby your earning capacity.

So where do you find these folks? They’re everywhere and they stand out, so you won’t have to look far before identifying one. The reasons you’d want to look outside your routine like this could be many, so do it as and when it works for you.

According to many, I fall into the eccentric category myself, and, as I’ve referred to above, I come with my own set of skills which can be utilized for specific outcomes. As you can imagine, I am thrilled when I receive contact for creative project management, which is where my core skills lie. Other eccentrics I know feel just the same when they’re approached, so give this some consideration next time you think you need to look outside the box you might find yourself in.
