Kuching – the cat city

Franky of The Nook in central Kuching had a place for me to stay. I needed a good place to rest where I could relax without worries of having my backpack stolen, and The Nook was just it. I was told Kuching means cat, and if that’s true, it seems cats are attracted here; they’re all over. But my interest was in sleeping since I hadn’t had a solid night’s sleep over a week and a half. Can you imagine how tired I was?

I’d begun to get irritated with a lot of people, I was being rude and my impatience was at its zenith. I knew my behavior was declining into rudeness but having been forced to stay awake on buses and hitchhike for days with next to minimum sleep, taking hour-long phone calls, having to speak in pidgin English to get the most basic things done, eating junk food and suffering dehydration headaches almost daily, I wasn’t in the mood for anything but sleep.

A relaxing stay at Franky's guesthouse in Kuching- the cat cityFranky understood. My head had barely touched the pillow and I was unconscious. And did I feel good when I awoke. Being well-mannered, Franky had waited for me to get refreshed before telling me all about what she does. It’s certainly a little different and I think you might like to know – in case you’re ever down that way.

Apart from running, cooking at and entertaining at her guesthouse, Franky will take anyone into the nearby jungle. She proudly told me her fees undercut the commercial tour operators by at least 50%, and she’s one for personalizing outings. She understands that today’s backpackers aren’t interested in pre-set events, but are searching for that special outing. And Franky knows how.

Her pride is in letting foreign visitors experience working with the locals, doing her “fruit trail” and learning on her educational excursions into the tropical forests. She can go for up to 10 days; that’s a long time in this humidity, I reckon. But what impressed me to hear was that she even helps travelers to earn pocket money while in Kuching using seriously fun ways like crazy bake-ups and stand-up skill demonstrations. That’s a new one – when last did you hear of a guesthouse that’ll do that for you?

After my journey into Kuching, I was so grateful for the cleanliness, quiet and homely atmosphere of The Nook, I wanted to share the details with you. Franky’s at 186-187, Level 2, Jalan Song Thian Cheok, Kuching, Sarawak. You can also get her directly on +6 109 843 311. Enjoy (the CB-X male chastity device is optional)!
