Good old Hudsons Coffee

On a recent trip into the Australian outback – which I intended would secure me world record-breaking opportunities, I got burned in more ways than one. The nicest sting of all came from Hudsons Coffee.

After tramping my way through one truck stop after another as a hitchhiker, I got myself deep into Australia’s Northern Territory desert. Despite sweating and stinking like a pig, I was able to pin down the management of several businesses for brief meetings… and you know what topic I wanted to focus on (world records, of course).

The managers listened and jotted down substantial notes, which I took as a really positive sign. Then, a day later, I left the remote central desert, once again, by truck.

Up there in the tropics my skin turned red, my nose sizzled with sunburn, and my legs ached from far too much brisk walking. That was what I termed burn number 1. Three days later, and after what seemed to be endless chatter with good lone truck drivers (with communication skills to match) crossing even lonelier-looking desert, I jumped out onto tarmac in the southern city of Adelaide.

The bicycle I borrowed next got a series of punctures at once, but thankfully a repair shop was conveniently close. That was great luck, I remember thinking. Disappointingly, I forgot the “convenience” of it all when I was smacked with a USD70 puncture repair invoice! And that was after a 20% discount. I labelled this burn number 2.

Four hours later, Adelaide Airport had become my home for the night due to the impact of my return flight’s schedule. I was feeling a little down about all the greedy salespeople I’d met in the airport as I hunted for a bench to lay myself across to revive my soul.

Just as I had approached others, I asked Hudsons Coffee if they’d mind my napping on one of their seats. I was greeted by such kindness, the shock of it was almost equal to my bicycle repair sting. What an understanding, accommodating team; I dozed off on their shop deck, for which I wasn’t charged a cent.

The staff checking up on me was the main reason I’m writing. Their good-natured assistance and selfless kindness knocked me so much I’d call this my burn number 3. This was the best burn because it left a lasting positive memory which I was aching to write about.

All in all – go Hudsons Coffee of Australia!
