Sometimes it’s about turning back

A skipper and I set sail from New Zealand to the Pacific island of Tonga. It was to be a fantastic journey of 12 days, crossing the high seas en route to some of the most idyllic islands in the South Pacific. All was going well until an auto-pilot issue arose and much to our mutual disappointment, the boat had to return to New Zealand shores. It was such a sad moment for us both, but one we knew was right – it wasn’t worth risking the journey with faulty gear. And so I came to accept that I was no longer headed to Tonga.

Sometimes it’s this way with world records too. Things just don’t work out. Things start but then fail. Sometimes things don’t even start at all. And no matter how far down the world record track I am when trouble strikes, at times I know I need to turn back. Hard to do, yes, but sensible.

Take a look at some world record failures on my website. I never got there. They all failed for at least one reason. But I don’t give up. In fact, failure can make me more determined, which it often does. That’s why I’m still in the business of breaking world records.

And I assure you, I’m still keen to arrive in Tonga one day – maybe not just yet, but one day soon.
